THE FULL BREAKDOWN
TOTAL COST OF A
SELF DRIVE ROAD TRIP
The rental rate is one line item, not the whole budget. Here is every cost that goes into a real trip from Chandigarh, with numbers, not vague ranges.
SEVEN LINE ITEMS
The daily rental rate
This is the only number most people budget for, and it already includes insurance, the Himachal inter-state permit, GPS tracking and doorstep delivery within the tricity. A Creta at ₹3,999 a day for a 4-day Manali trip is ₹15,996 before anything else.
₹15,996 for a 4-day Creta rental
Fuel
You get the car with a full tank and return it full, so fuel is the one variable cost nobody can fix in advance. Mileage varies by car and by how much mountain climbing is involved. A rough rule for planning: 8 to 10 km per litre for a petrol SUV on hill roads.
620 km round trip to Manali at 9 km/l and ₹100/litre ≈ ₹6,900
Tolls
The Chandigarh to Manali route via NH205 and NH21 has a handful of toll plazas. Budget for a modest but real amount, higher on routes with more highway stretches like Amritsar than on hill routes like Kasauli.
₹400 to ₹700 one way to Manali
Permits
The Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit is included in every SelfDriveGo rate. Rohtang Pass and the Leh Inner Line Permit have their own separate government fees, which we walk you through before departure if your route needs them.
Included for standard HP routes, small separate fee for Rohtang or Leh permits
Food and stays
This is the same cost whether you self drive or take a taxi or a bus, so it does not change the comparison between options, but it belongs in a real trip budget. A mid-range Himachal stay runs ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 a night for a couple.
₹2,000 to ₹4,000/night for stays, ₹500 to ₹800/day for food per person
Security deposit (refundable)
Not a real cost, since it comes back within 24 hours of return with no damage. It is worth budgeting for as cash flow though, since it is collected directly by our team alongside the one day advance that confirms your booking. There is no online payment on the website; both amounts are settled by UPI or bank transfer.
₹5,000 for a car, refunded within 24 hours
Extra kilometres
Most cars include 300 to 350 km a day. A round trip that stays inside the daily allowance for the whole rental avoids this entirely. Side trips, like Solang Valley or Sissu once you are based in Manali, are the usual reason people go over.

COMMON QUESTIONS
What is the total cost of a self drive trip from Chandigarh to Manali?
For a 4-day trip in a Creta, expect roughly ₹23,000 total: about ₹16,000 for the rental including insurance and permit, and about ₹7,000 for fuel and tolls on a 620 km round trip. Food and stays are on top and are the same cost regardless of how you travel.
Does the rental rate include fuel?
No. The daily rate includes insurance, the Himachal permit, GPS and doorstep delivery, but fuel is paid separately, the same as it would be if you owned the car.
What is the biggest hidden cost people forget to budget for?
Extra kilometres. Most cars include 300 to 350 km a day, which covers a direct round trip comfortably, but side trips once you arrive at your destination can push you over. Ask us to estimate your total km before you leave and we will tell you honestly if you are close to the limit.
How much should I budget for tolls on a Chandigarh to Spiti trip?
Less than you would expect, since most of Spiti is not a tolled highway. The bigger cost on that route is fuel, because fewer pumps and more climbing lower your mileage compared to a flat highway trip.
Is the security deposit part of the trip cost?
Not really, since it is refunded within 24 hours of the vehicle coming back with no damage. It matters for cash flow at the start of the trip, not for the actual cost of the trip.
