NH5 from Parwanoo upward is roughly seventy five kilometres of continuous climb with trucks and slow traffic on it. In the manual Swift you shift constantly for three hours. In the Baleno you do not, and the ₹700 a day difference between them is the smallest amount of money that buys the biggest change in how a drive feels.
It is also a genuinely well equipped car rather than a stripped one. A 360 degree camera, head-up display and a decent sound system, which matter more than the spec sheet suggests when you are parking in Shimla or spending four hours on NH7 to Amritsar. Fuel economy on a flat highway run is the best in our fleet.
It is compact enough for the lanes in Shimla and McLeod Ganj, which is a real advantage rather than a consolation. On this route being small is worth more than being powerful.

THE HONEST PART
What the Baleno is bad at
Rough surfaces. It is a hatchback with hatchback clearance, so it is fine on every paved route and wrong anywhere the tarmac breaks up. Not released for Spiti or Ladakh, and not the car for Solang after snow.
Immediate acceleration. The CVT is smooth and takes a moment to respond when you ask for a sudden overtake. On a two-lane hill road that means planning the pass rather than deciding on it, which is how you should be driving there anyway.
Five adults with luggage. Four people and four bags is comfortable. Five adults with a week of kit each is not, and that is when the Creta earns its extra ₹2,000 a day.
