WHY CHANDIGARH
IS THE BEST BASE
Delhi sits about 270 km from the Himachal Pradesh border. From Chandigarh you are in the foothills inside 45 minutes, past Parwanoo and climbing.
That gap changes the shape of a trip. A Kasauli run from Chandigarh is roughly three hours of driving in total, so it fits inside a Sunday. From Delhi the same trip is closer to nine hours behind the wheel and stops being a weekend.
It also changes how tired you are when the road gets difficult. Anyone driving up from Delhi hits the first real hairpins after four hours of highway. Starting here, you meet them fresh.

HOW TO CHOOSE
WHICH ROUTE FITS
THE DAYS YOU HAVE
Most people pick a destination first and then discover it does not fit the leave they got approved. Working backwards from the number of days is a better way round. Two days means Kasauli or Shimla. Three days opens up Dharamshala and makes Manali reasonable rather than rushed. Anything above a week is where Spiti and Leh become possible, and below that they are genuinely not.
The second filter is the car, and it is less about comfort than most listings suggest. On Kasauli, Shimla, Amritsar and Dharamshala the road surface never asks for ground clearance, so a Swift or a Baleno is enough and the smaller footprint helps in Shimla parking. Manali sits in the middle, fine in a Creta in season, better in something with clearance if you plan to push past Solang or up to Sethan. Spiti and Leh are hard limits, 4x4 only, and we will not release a 2WD car for either no matter how the booking is worded.
Season is the filter people skip. Spiti and the Manali to Leh highway are shut for most of the year by snow on the passes, not by policy. Between roughly November and May, Kunzum La and Baralacha La are under snow and no vehicle gets through. Kasauli, Shimla, Dharamshala and Amritsar work in every month, though January can bring ice on the Shimla approach after dark.
Two days or a weekend
Kasauli, Shimla
Leave Saturday morning, back Sunday evening, no night driving needed. Both are inside 120 km, so if the weather turns you can simply come home.

Enough time for a real drive plus two or three days in one place. Manali needs an early start on day one, Dharamshala does not.

ROUTE QUESTIONS
Which road trip from Chandigarh is best for a first time hill driver?
Kasauli at 60 km, then Shimla at 115 km. Both are on maintained two lane roads with steady traffic, fuel every 20 to 30 km and phone signal almost the whole way. If something feels wrong you are never more than an hour from help, which is not true on Spiti or the Manali to Leh highway.
What is the longest drive you can realistically do from Chandigarh in one day?
Manali at 310 km is the honest limit for a single day, and only if you leave Chandigarh by 6 AM. Dharamshala at 240 km is easier because the road is flatter. Spiti and Leh cannot be done in a day and should not be attempted, both because of distance and because you need to gain altitude slowly.
Which routes need a 4x4?
Spiti Valley and Leh. We do not release 2WD cars for either. Everything else on this list, including Manali, is fine in a hatchback or a front wheel drive SUV in normal conditions. Snow changes that, so check with us if you are travelling between December and February.
