Rates and kilometre maths →HOW OUTSTATION HIRE ACTUALLY WORKS
Outstation car rental from Chandigarh is straightforward once you understand the two numbers that matter: the day rate and the kilometre allowance. Everything else on these pages exists to stop those two numbers surprising you.
The day rate covers the car, comprehensive insurance, GPS, the Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit, WhatsApp support for the whole trip and delivery to your address anywhere in the Tricity. It runs from ₹1,299 for a Maruti Swift to ₹7,999 for a Toyota Fortuner. Fuel, tolls, parking and any challans are yours. The refundable deposit is ₹5,000 for a car and comes back within twenty four hours of return.
The allowance is 300 to 400 km a day depending on the car, and it is where people get caught. A Manali round trip is 620 km, so a two day hire on a 300 km car is already over before you have driven anywhere in the valley. Tell us the plan and we will either put you in a car with a bigger allowance or price a higher one up front, which is cheaper than paying ₹8 a kilometre in arrears.
One way car rental from Chandigarh
We do quote one way drops, and the honest position is that they rarely make financial sense. The charge exists because a driver has to bring the car home, so it tracks the distance being retrieved rather than the distance you drove. Amritsar is cheap to retrieve and Leh is not.
The exception is a genuine fly-out: people who drive up to Dharamshala and take the Gaggal flight back, or fly out of Bhuntar after Manali. If that is your plan, say so at booking. For everything else, the second rental day costs less than the retrieval and leaves you with a car at the destination, which is the whole reason to hire one rather than take a taxi.
A loop is often the better answer. Kinnaur in and Kunzum La out for Spiti, or Manali up and Srinagar down for Ladakh, gives you a one way experience with a round trip price, because the car still comes home to Chandigarh.
Self drive against a chauffeured taxi
Worth doing the sums, because the taxi quotes are higher than most people assume. These are public one way Innova Crysta fares from Chandigarh operators against what the same trip costs as a self drive hire, rental only, fuel excluded on both sides:
Shimla
Chauffeured taxi
around ₹8,000 one way
Self drive with us
2 days in a Baleno, ₹3,998

See the rates →The taxi figure buys one journey in one direction. The rental figure buys the car for the whole trip, including the way back and every short run once you are there. Add fuel to the self drive column and the totals land close on Shimla, and self drive wins clearly on anything longer. Where the taxi genuinely wins is a single one way transfer when nobody in the group wants to drive, and we will say so if you ask.
Routes we will not send every car on
Two of them. Spiti Valley and Ladakh are released to the Jimny, Thar, Hilux and Fortuner only, and no amount of asking changes it. Past Sumdo the surface turns to loose shale with water crossings that deepen through the afternoon, and the Manali-Leh Highway crosses five passes above 4,000 metres. The Jimny costs the same as the Creta we will not let you take, so this is a rule rather than an upsell.
In winter we ask for your route before releasing a car for anything past Kufri or the Atal Tunnel approach, and occasionally we decline. If you would rather read about the driving itself than the rental, the route guides cover surfaces, fuel stops and where each drive gets hard.
FAQ
OUTSTATION AND ONE WAY QUESTIONS
Does SelfDriveGo allow outstation trips in a self drive car?
Yes. Every car in the SelfDriveGo fleet is cleared for outstation travel and the Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit is already inside the daily rate, so there is nothing to pay at the Parwanoo barrier. The only restriction we apply is by route rather than by distance: Spiti Valley and Ladakh are released to the Jimny, Thar, Hilux and Fortuner only.
How much does outstation car rental from Chandigarh cost?
Rates start at ₹1,299 a day for a Maruti Swift and ₹3,999 for an SUV such as the Hyundai Creta or Maruti Jimny, with 300 to 400 kilometres included per day depending on the car. A two day Shimla trip in a Baleno automatic works out at ₹3,998 of rental plus fuel and tolls. Insurance, GPS, the Himachal permit and Tricity delivery are all inside the day rate.
Do you offer one way car rental from Chandigarh?
Yes, on quote. A one way drop carries a retrieval charge, because a driver has to bring the car back to Chandigarh, and that charge scales with distance. It is modest to Amritsar at 230 km of flat highway and substantial to Leh at over 700 km over the passes. For most trips keeping the car for an extra day costs less than the retrieval and leaves you with a vehicle at the destination.
Is a self drive car cheaper than a taxi to Manali?
Usually, and by a wide margin. One way chauffeured Innova Crysta quotes from Chandigarh to Manali sit around ₹15,000, which buys the journey and nothing else. A Hyundai Creta from SelfDriveGo at ₹3,999 a day means a three day trip costs ₹11,997 in rental, and that includes the return leg plus the car being available for Solang and Naggar in between. Add fuel of roughly ₹6,000 for the 620 km round trip and the two numbers are close, except one of them includes a week of freedom.
How many kilometres are included on an outstation rental?
Between 300 and 400 kilometres per day depending on the car. The Swift, Baleno, Jimny and Thar carry 300, the Creta, Scorpio N and Hilux carry 350, and the Toyota Fortuner carries 400. Anything beyond the allowance is billed at ₹8 per kilometre. Each destination page below works the arithmetic for that specific run so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Which permits do I need for an outstation trip from Chandigarh?
The Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit covers Kasauli, Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Kinnaur, and SelfDriveGo includes it with the paperwork travelling in the car. Rohtang Pass needs a separate capped permit that we arrange for 4x4 bookings. Spiti and Ladakh need Inner Line Permits obtained locally at Reckong Peo, Kaza or Leh. Amritsar needs nothing at all, since Punjab and Chandigarh share the road network.
Can I get the car delivered for an early morning outstation start?
Yes, and it is the better way to do it. We deliver the evening before across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula at no charge, and to Zirakpur or Derabassi for a flat ₹200. The car arrives fuelled, we photograph its condition with you, and you leave from your own gate at whatever hour suits rather than starting the day at a depot.
What happens if a landslide or snowfall delays my return?
Message SelfDriveGo on WhatsApp as soon as you know, not at the return deadline. Landslides on the Mandi to Pandoh stretch and snow above Kufri are normal parts of the Himachal calendar and we have extended hires and rearranged handovers for people stuck on both. We would rather move your return than have you drive a road that reopened an hour ago in the dark.
