Thar on rent in Chandigarh, and what it is actually good for
Thar on rent in Chandigarh gets asked for more than any other 4x4 we own, and roughly half the people asking should take something else. The half who should take it are going somewhere with loose surfaces and want the locking rear differential, or want the roof off on a clear day in Lahaul. The other half are going to Shimla and have been sold an image.
The car itself is serious. 226 mm of clearance, shift-on-the-fly four wheel drive, an electronic locking rear differential, and 650 mm of rated water wading, which is more than you should ever deliberately use. It is cleared for Spiti and the Manali-Leh Highway, and at ₹4,499 a day with 300 km included it sits ₹500 above the Jimny.
What the extra ₹500 buys you is the differential and the presence, not more capability everywhere. The Thar is 175 mm wider than a Jimny and around 550 kg heavier, and both of those are felt on the narrow exposed sections above Nako where you would rather be in the smaller car.
Four seats, and the removable roof is a genuine pleasure until weather arrives, at which point it becomes a job. We deliver it with the roof on, and if you want it off we will show you how at handover.

THE HONEST PART
What the Thar is bad at
Carrying people and their things. Four seats and a boot that disappears once you have a cooler and two duffels in it. A family of five simply does not fit, and there is no arrangement of luggage that fixes it.
Narrow exposed roads. This is the honest counterweight to its reputation. On the Khab to Nako switchbacks or the Chicham approach, a Jimny is the easier car to place and costs ₹500 less a day. The Thar is better on loose surfaces and worse on tight ones.
Fuel and refinement over long distances. It is a ladder-frame off-roader, so 310 km to Manali is noisier and thirstier than the same trip in a Creta. And if it rains with the roof off, you will remember it for years, which is either a drawback or the point depending on the person.
