Booking
How do I book a self drive car in Chandigarh?Popular
Use the booking form on selfdrivego.com to send your dates, vehicle and pickup location, or WhatsApp us the same details directly, which many first-time customers prefer. Our team confirms manually and takes you through payment over WhatsApp or a call. There is no online payment on the website itself.
How far in advance should I book a car for a weekend trip?
Book at least 5 to 7 days ahead for weekends and long weekends, especially May to June and October, because the Jimny and Thar fill first. Weekdays usually need only 2 to 3 days. For Leh or Spiti in July and August, book 2 to 3 weeks out since those cars run a minimum multi-day rental.
Can I change my dates after booking?
Yes, date changes are free if the vehicle is available and you tell us at least 24 hours before the original pickup time. Vehicle upgrades depend on availability and any price difference. We do not charge a change fee.
What is your cancellation policy?Popular
Cancel more than 48 hours before pickup and you get a full refund, no questions asked. Between 24 and 48 hours before, it is a 50% refund. Inside 24 hours, there is no refund. Weather cancellations such as flash floods or a closed pass are always treated as free cancellations.
How much is the security deposit for a self drive rental?Popular
SelfDriveGo charges a ₹5,000 refundable deposit on cars and ₹2,000 on bikes, collected directly by our team alongside the one day advance. It is returned within 24 hours of the vehicle coming back, provided there is no damage beyond normal wear. We photograph the vehicle before and after handover so there is nothing to argue about.
Can someone else drive the car if I made the booking?
The booking stays in your name and you remain the primary driver on record. You can add a co-driver at no extra charge, but every driver, primary or additional, needs their own valid licence uploaded before delivery.
Do I need to pay the full amount upfront?Popular
No. An advance equal to one day of the rental rate confirms your slot, and the balance is settled at delivery. There is no online payment on the website: our team collects the advance directly over UPI, bank transfer or in person once you are ready to lock the dates.
Can I pay online through the SelfDriveGo website?
No, the website does not process any online payment. Every booking is confirmed through direct interaction with our team on WhatsApp or a call, and payment (the one day advance to hold your slot, plus the security deposit) is collected directly by us via UPI, bank transfer or cash. This keeps the process personal and avoids a card being charged automatically for a slot you have not yet confirmed with a real person.
Can I book a car for someone flying into Chandigarh airport?
Yes. Tell us the flight number and arrival time when you book, and we deliver the car to Chandigarh International Airport so it is waiting when the passenger lands. There is no separate airport surcharge.
Delivery & Pickup
Do you deliver the car to my home or hotel?Popular
Yes. SelfDriveGo delivers free to any address within Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, typically the evening before an early start. You do not need to visit our Sector 22 office unless you want to see the fleet in person first.
Do you deliver to Mohali?
Yes, doorstep delivery to any Mohali phase or sector is included at no extra charge, the same as delivery within Chandigarh.
Do you deliver to Zirakpur?
Yes, Zirakpur is inside our free delivery zone, covering VIP Road, Patiala Road and the surrounding sectors.
Do you deliver to Panchkula?
Yes, all Panchkula sectors are covered under free doorstep delivery, the same as Chandigarh and Mohali.
Can you deliver a self drive car to Chandigarh airport (IXC)?
Yes, we deliver to Chandigarh International Airport with no separate airport fee. Share your flight details and we time the handover to your landing.
Can you deliver to Chandigarh railway station?
Yes, Chandigarh railway station is within our standard free delivery zone. Give us the train number and we will be at the pickup point when you arrive.
Can you deliver near ISBT Sector 43?
Yes, ISBT Sector 43 and the surrounding area are inside the free delivery zone, which covers all of Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur.
What happens during vehicle delivery?
A team member walks you through the car: current fuel level, any pre-existing marks that were already photographed, the spare tyre location, and the roadside kit. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, you sign the delivery note, and the keys are yours.
Can I return the car to a different address than where I picked it up?
Usually yes within the tricity, if you let us know at booking time. For outstation one-way drop, tell us the destination city and we will confirm whether that route is available and what it costs.
What are your delivery hours?
Standard doorstep delivery runs from 6 AM to 10 PM. Deliveries outside that window are possible for early mountain departures, so mention your planned start time when booking and we will arrange it.

Documents
What documents do I need to rent a self drive car?Popular
A valid Indian driving licence held for at least one year, plus an Aadhaar card or passport. Both are uploaded through our booking form or sent over WhatsApp, and verification is digital, so nothing needs to be brought in person.
Can foreign nationals rent a self drive car in Chandigarh?
Yes. Foreign nationals need a valid passport, an Indian visa, and an International Driving Permit issued in their home country that stays valid for the whole rental. See our full guide on renting as a foreign national or NRI for the paperwork in detail.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
21 years old with a licence held for at least one year. For the Jimny or Thar on Spiti or Leh, we prefer drivers with at least two years of mountain driving experience, though this is a recommendation rather than a hard rule.
How long does document verification take?
Under 2 hours on weekdays between 9 AM and 6 PM. Documents submitted after 6 PM are usually verified the next morning. We never release a car before verification clears.
Do I need to submit physical copies of my documents?
No. Photos or scans uploaded through the booking form or WhatsApp are enough for every domestic rental. Physical copies are never required.
Is my document data kept secure?
Your licence and ID are stored securely for verification only, kept for future bookings so you do not have to re-upload each time, and never sold or shared with third parties.
What documents are required for an NRI renting a car in India?
An NRI with a valid Indian driving licence can rent using that licence plus their passport, the same as a resident Indian. If the licence has expired or was never issued in India, an International Driving Permit is required instead.

Fleet
Which cars does SelfDriveGo have in Chandigarh?Popular
Eight cars: the Maruti Swift, Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Jimny, Mahindra Thar, Mahindra Scorpio N, Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner. We also rent three Royal Enfield motorcycles and two mountain bikes.
Is the Thar available on rent in Chandigarh?Popular
Yes, the Mahindra Thar is in our Chandigarh fleet from ₹4,499 a day, with shift-on-the-fly 4x4 and a removable roof. It is cleared for Spiti and Leh alongside the Jimny, Hilux and Fortuner.
Can I rent a Fortuner for self drive in Chandigarh?Popular
Yes, the Toyota Fortuner is available for self drive in Chandigarh at ₹7,999 a day with a 400 km daily limit, the largest allowance on the fleet. It is our flagship pick for Leh, Spiti and corporate travel where a quiet, powerful SUV matters more than the daily rate.
Which cars are automatic?
The Baleno, Creta, Scorpio N, Hilux and Fortuner are automatic. The Swift is manual only. The Thar comes in both manual and automatic. See our automatic car rental Chandigarh page for the full lineup.
Which car should I take for Spiti or Leh?
A 4x4 is required for both: the Jimny, Thar, Hilux or Fortuner. We do not release the Swift, Baleno, Creta or Scorpio N on the Kunzum La, Rohtang or Manali-Leh highway sections. The Jimny is the cheapest of the four and our default recommendation, though the Thar suits people who want the open-top experience and the Hilux or Fortuner suit larger groups.
Do you have a 7 seater car for rent in Chandigarh?
Yes, the Mahindra Scorpio N and Toyota Fortuner both seat seven. See our 7 seater car rental Chandigarh page for pricing and which of the two fits a given group size and budget.
What is the difference between the Jimny and the Thar?
Both are 4x4s cleared for Spiti and Leh. The Jimny is smaller, cheaper at ₹3,999 a day, and easier to place on narrow mountain roads. The Thar is bigger, costs more at ₹4,499 a day, seats the same four but with more cabin room, and comes with a removable roof for open-air driving. Our Jimny vs Thar comparison breaks down which one suits which kind of trip.
What condition are the rental cars in?
Every vehicle is serviced monthly regardless of mileage and gets a full pre-delivery check covering tyres, brakes, fluid levels, spare tyre and the emergency kit before it leaves our yard. If a car does not meet that standard we hold the delivery and fix it first.
Can I inspect the car before booking?
Yes, if you are in Chandigarh you are welcome to visit our Sector 22 office and look at any available vehicle before you commit.
What happens if the car breaks down during my trip?
Call or WhatsApp us immediately. We have contacts and arrangements along every major route we operate on. For a mechanical fault that is not caused by driver negligence, we cover the repair and arrange a replacement vehicle where one is available within a few hours.
Does every rental car have GPS tracking?
Yes, every SelfDriveGo vehicle carries a GPS tracker, mainly for fleet management and for locating you if you go unreachable in a remote stretch. You can request to opt out of location sharing after a trip for personal privacy if you ask us in writing.
Do you rent Royal Enfield motorcycles in Chandigarh?
Yes, the Royal Enfield Himalayan, Classic 350 and Meteor 350 are all available, alongside two mountain bikes. See our bikes page for individual pricing and which model suits which route.
Which car is best for snow driving in Himachal?
The Thar and Jimny handle light snow well because of their 4x4 systems and higher ground clearance, but we do not send any car, 4x4 or not, into active heavy snowfall. If a pass is closed or icing over, we hold the booking rather than release the vehicle.
Destinations
Can I take a self drive car from Chandigarh to Manali?
Yes, Manali is our most booked outstation route. Any car in the fleet can make the drive, though the Creta and Thar are the most popular for the Rohtang stretch. See our Chandigarh to Manali car rental page for rates and inclusions.
Can I drive a rental car from Chandigarh to Shimla?
Yes, Shimla is a well-paved 115 km drive that any car in the fleet handles comfortably. The Baleno automatic is the most booked option for this route. Check our Chandigarh to Shimla car rental page for the current rate.
Can I take the car to Spiti Valley?
Yes, but only a 4x4. Spiti is a 4x4 only route on the Jimny, Thar, Hilux or Fortuner, and we do not release two-wheel-drive cars for the Kunzum La and Pin valley sections. Full details are on our Chandigarh to Spiti Valley car rental page.
Can I drive a self drive car to Leh-Ladakh from Chandigarh?

Is Kasauli a good self drive trip from Chandigarh?
Yes, Kasauli is 60 km and about 1.5 hours away, the easiest hill escape from Chandigarh with no technical driving and no permits to arrange. Rates and the recommended car are on our Chandigarh to Kasauli car rental page.
Can I take a rental car to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj?
Yes, any car in the fleet handles the Chandigarh to Dharamshala drive comfortably since there are no technical sections. Details and rates are on our Chandigarh to Dharamshala car rental page.
Can I self drive from Chandigarh to Amritsar?
Yes, Amritsar is 230 km of flat highway, one of the easiest long drives we operate, well suited to any car including the Swift. See our Chandigarh to Amritsar car rental page for rates.
Do you allow one way trips, like Chandigarh to Manali without returning the car to Chandigarh?
Selected one-way routes are available. Tell us your destination when booking and we will confirm whether a one-way drop is possible and what the repositioning charge is for that route.
Permits & Documents on the Road
Which states can I drive a self drive car to from Chandigarh?
The Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit is included on every rental, which covers Shimla, Manali, Spiti, Dharamshala, Kasauli and all standard HP routes. Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand need no separate permit. Ladakh requires an additional permit, which we handle for you.
Do I need a permit to drive to Himachal Pradesh?
Yes, an inter-state travel permit is required for any private vehicle from outside Himachal, and SelfDriveGo includes it in every rental rate at no extra cost. Our Himachal inter-state permit guide covers what the document actually is and which checkposts ask for it.
Do I need a separate permit for Rohtang Pass?
Yes, a daily permit is required for private vehicles crossing Rohtang Pass, booked online at himachalrohtang.nic.in one to two days in advance during peak season from June to August. We include this in the trip pack for every Manali booking.
Is an Inner Line Permit needed for Spiti Valley?
Standard Spiti circuit driving through Kaza, Kibber and the Kinnaur approach needs no Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens. An ILP is only required near the actual China border areas such as Shipki La, and we advise against attempting those without prior arrangement.
What permits are needed for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake or Tso Moriri near Leh?
An Inner Line Permit is required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri, obtainable in Leh and generally arranged the same day. We help coordinate this as part of a Leh circuit booking.
Is the Himachal permit fee included in the rental price?
Yes, the Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit is bundled into every SelfDriveGo rate with no separate line item. Rohtang and Inner Line Permits for Leh have their own government fees, which we walk you through before the trip.
Can I drive to Uttarakhand, like Mussoorie or Rishikesh, in a rental car?
Yes, with advance notice so we can confirm the documentation is in order before delivery. There is no extra permit required for Uttarakhand from Punjab or Chandigarh registration.

Pricing & Kilometres
What is included in the daily rental rate?Popular
Insurance, the Himachal inter-state permit, GPS tracking, doorstep delivery within Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, roadside assistance and 24/7 WhatsApp support are all included in the daily rate. There are no hidden add-ons once your booking is confirmed.
What is the cheapest self drive car in Chandigarh?
The Maruti Swift is our cheapest car at ₹1,299 a day. The Maruti Baleno automatic is next at ₹1,999. Both come with the same 300 km daily allowance as the rest of the fleet.
What is the daily kilometre limit on a rental car?Popular
Most cars carry a 300 km daily limit, the Creta and Scorpio N run 350 km, and the Fortuner runs 400 km. Extra kilometres beyond the limit are charged at ₹8 per km. Tell us in advance if your route needs more, and we can arrange an unlimited km package.
What happens if I return the car late?
Up to 2 hours late has no charge. Between 2 and 6 hours late is billed at half a day rate. Beyond 6 hours is a full extra day. Call ahead if you know you will be late and we will usually accommodate it.
Are there discounts for a long rental?
Yes, 7 or more days gets 10% off the total, and 14 or more days gets 15% off, applied when we confirm your booking. Corporate accounts with recurring bookings get a custom rate on request.
What payment methods do you accept?
UPI and bank transfer directly to us, or cash for walk-in bookings at our Sector 22 office. There is no card checkout or online payment gateway on the website. The one day advance and the security deposit are both collected the same way, arranged with our team over WhatsApp or a call.
Is a self drive car cheaper than an outstation taxi to Manali?
For two or more people travelling together, yes in most cases. A Creta self drive at ₹3,999 a day gives you the car for the whole trip with no per-kilometre taxi meter and no driver waiting charges, while a one-way Innova taxi to Manali commonly runs ₹15,000 or more before the return leg. See the full self drive versus taxi comparison for the itemised numbers.
Do you charge extra for hill routes or mountain permits?
No, the daily rate is the same whether you drive within the tricity or take the car to Manali or Spiti. The Himachal permit is included, and the only variable cost is extra kilometres beyond the daily allowance.
Insurance & Safety
What does the rental insurance cover?
Comprehensive insurance covering third-party liability and own damage is included on every rental. It excludes damage from drunk driving, off-road use outside the agreed route, and wilful negligence.
What should I do if I have an accident in a rental car?
Your safety comes first, so call us immediately on WhatsApp or phone. Do not move the vehicle until photos are taken. We guide you through the insurance claim from there, and comprehensive cover handles third-party liability and own damage.
Is it safe for a woman to travel solo in a self drive car?
Yes. Every SelfDriveGo vehicle has GPS, our support line runs 24/7 with real people, and many solo female customers share live location with us during remote stretches, with check-ins at agreed points along the way.
What should I do about altitude sickness on the way to Spiti or Leh?
Build in acclimatisation days rather than rushing the altitude gain, which we outline in the trip pack for every Spiti and Leh booking. If symptoms like severe headache or breathlessness appear, descend and speak to a doctor rather than pushing on, since this is a medical decision beyond what we can advise on here.
Do you provide roadside assistance?
Yes, 24/7 WhatsApp and phone support runs for the full duration of every rental, and we have assistance contacts along every route we operate. Every customer gets a trip-specific contact rather than a generic call centre number.
What happens if the car is damaged and it was not my fault?
Document it with photos and call us before doing anything else. If the damage was caused by another party, such as a collision, we handle it through insurance and do not deduct it from your deposit while that claim is active.
Monthly & Corporate
Do you offer monthly car rental in Chandigarh?
Yes, monthly rentals are available on most of the fleet at a discounted block rate compared to stacking daily prices for 30 days. See our monthly car rental page for current terms.
Is monthly car rental cheaper than a normal daily rental?
Yes for a full month of use, since the monthly rate is quoted as a block rather than 30 separate daily charges. Compared to buying a car outright, you also skip insurance, servicing, parking and resale, which matters for a short posting or a temporary need.
Do you offer corporate car rental for companies in Chandigarh?
Yes, we handle corporate accounts with GST invoicing, custom multi-vehicle rates and priority booking for repeat business travel. See our corporate page or WhatsApp your requirement for a custom quote.
Can a company book multiple vehicles at once for an event or offsite?
Yes, share the number of vehicles, dates, destination and whether you need GST invoicing, and we respond with a custom rate and vehicle recommendation, usually within 2 hours on weekdays.
Bikes
Can I rent a Royal Enfield in Chandigarh?
Yes, the Royal Enfield Himalayan, Classic 350 and Meteor 350 are all available for self ride rental, priced from ₹1,099 a day for the Classic 350.
Which Royal Enfield is best for a Leh or Spiti bike trip?
The Himalayan, built specifically for mountain touring with a long-range tank and switchable ABS suited to loose gravel sections. The Classic 350 and Meteor 350 are better suited to highway and hill-station riding closer to Chandigarh rather than the high passes.
Do you rent mountain bikes as well as motorcycles?
Yes, we rent hardtail and full-suspension mountain bikes alongside the motorcycle fleet, popular for riding at Shimla Bike Park or combined with a car rental for a drive-up, ride-down trip.
What documents do I need to rent a motorcycle?
The same as a car: a valid driving licence covering motorcycles, held for at least one year, plus Aadhaar or a passport.
Foreign Nationals & NRIs
Can a foreign tourist rent a self drive car in India?Popular
Yes, with a valid passport, an Indian visa and an International Driving Permit issued in the traveller's home country. Full details, including driving-side tips and the right first car, are on our foreign national and NRI car rental page.
What is an International Driving Permit and do I really need one?
An International Driving Permit, or IDP, is a translation and validation of your home licence recognised for driving in India. Foreign nationals without one cannot legally self drive here, so it is required, not optional, and must be arranged before travel since it cannot be issued in India.
Can an NRI with a foreign licence rent a car in Chandigarh?
Yes, an NRI can rent using a valid Indian driving licence if they still hold one, or an International Driving Permit alongside their passport if their Indian licence has lapsed or was never issued.
Is Chandigarh a good starting point for a foreign tourist heading to Ladakh?
Yes, Chandigarh cuts roughly 250 km off the drive compared to starting from Delhi, which matters on a route that already runs 700 km-plus one way. It also gives easier access to a 4x4 fleet suited to the Manali-Leh Highway.
