Manali is where a Chandigarh rental stops being an errand and becomes a trip. It is 310 km, a full driving day, and the first route on our list where the choice of car changes what you can actually do once you arrive.
For Manali town, Old Manali and Naggar, any car in the fleet is enough, and the Creta is the one most families pick. The question is whether you intend to stay in the valley. Solang, the Atal Tunnel through to Sissu, Rohtang and anything pointing toward Spiti or Chandratal is where a 4x4 stops being a luxury. People underestimate this and end up parking at the bottom of the interesting roads.
The distance also means the daily kilometre allowance is worth doing arithmetic on before you book, rather than discovering it on the invoice. There is a worked example below.
WHICH CAR FOR MANALI
Most bookedHyundai Creta

If you go higherMaruti Jimny
SUZUKI₹3,999/day · 300 km included
Same price as the Creta and the better call if you plan to go past Manali. Solang, the tunnel to Sissu and the Rohtang approach are what it is for.
AdventureMahindra Thar
MAHINDRA₹4,499/day · 300 km included
Open top on the clear days, locking rear differential when the surface turns loose. Four seats only, so it suits couples and small groups rather than families.
Seven seatsMahindra Scorpio N
MAHINDRA₹5,499/day · 350 km included
Seven seats and strong torque for a long highway day. The most comfortable way to move a large group over 310 km in one go.
THE KILOMETRE MATHS
Round trip, Chandigarh to Manali and back
620 km
Chandigarh to Manali and back is roughly 620 km before you have driven anywhere in the valley. On a Creta at 350 km a day, a three day hire gives you 1,050 km, which leaves around 430 km for Solang, Naggar, the Atal Tunnel and the general drifting about that Manali invites. That is enough.
A two day hire is where it gets tight. Two days on a 300 km car is 600 km, and the round trip alone is 620, so you would be paying overage at ₹8 a kilometre before leaving the hotel. If you only have two days, either take a car with a 350 or 400 km allowance or tell us and we will price a higher allowance rather than let it accumulate silently.

Permits and paperwork
The Himachal inter-state permit is included and lives in the car. Manali needs nothing more. Crossing Rohtang Pass is the exception: it requires a separate permit with a daily cap on vehicle numbers, applied for in advance, and we arrange it for 4x4 customers who tell us at booking. The Atal Tunnel bypasses Rohtang entirely and needs no permit, which is how most Lahaul trips now run.
When to book
March to June and September to November are the good windows. April and May are busiest and the 4x4 cars go first, so a Jimny or Thar for a May long weekend should be booked two to three weeks out. July and August are cheap and green and also the landslide season on the Mandi to Pandoh stretch, so build slack into your dates. For December to February we want your route before handing over keys.
One way, or drop back in Chandigarh
One way to Manali is possible and we do quote it, usually for people flying out of Bhuntar or carrying on by bus. It carries a retrieval charge because a driver has to bring the car back 310 km. For most trips keeping the car is both cheaper and more useful, since Manali without a vehicle means negotiating a taxi for every short trip up the valley.

RENTING FOR MANALI
How much does a car rental from Chandigarh to Manali cost?
A Creta or Jimny is ₹3,999 a day, a Thar ₹4,499 and a Scorpio N ₹5,499. A three day Manali trip in a Creta is ₹11,997 of rental, which includes insurance, the Himachal permit, GPS, 24/7 support and free Tricity delivery. Fuel, tolls and any kilometres past the allowance are separate.
Do I need a 4x4 to drive from Chandigarh to Manali?
Not for Manali itself. The road is tarmac the whole way and a hatchback manages it. A 4x4 matters for what lies beyond: Solang in poor weather, the Atal Tunnel run to Sissu, the Rohtang approach and anything toward Spiti or Chandratal. If your plan stops at Manali town and Naggar, save the money.
How many days should I hire the car for?
Three days minimum, four or five if you want the valley properly. The 620 km round trip eats most of a two day allowance on its own, so a two day hire usually costs you in overage what a third day would have cost outright.
Is the Rohtang Pass permit included?
The standard Himachal permit is included. The Rohtang permit is separate, capped at a limited number of vehicles per day and has to be applied for in advance. We arrange it at no extra charge for customers in a 4x4 who tell us at booking. Most people now use the Atal Tunnel instead, which needs no permit at all.
Can I drive to Manali in winter with a rented car?
Usually yes, because NH3 is cleared as a priority, but it depends on conditions in the week you travel. Between December and February we will ask exactly where you intend to go before releasing a car, and we may steer you toward a different vehicle. Solang and the tunnel approach close on heavy snow days.
What if a landslide delays my return?
Message us early rather than at the return deadline. Landslides on the Mandi to Pandoh section are a normal part of monsoon and we have held cars and rearranged plans for people stuck on that road before. We would rather extend the hire than have you drive something that has just reopened in the dark.
