This is the hardest thing we rent for, and the booking conversation is different because of it. Spiti is not a longer version of Manali. Past Sumdo the tarmac gives up, there are glacier-fed water crossings that get deeper through the afternoon, and the villages above Kaza sit past 4,200 metres.

We release the Jimny and the Thar for Spiti and nothing else. That is a condition of the rental rather than a way of selling you a more expensive car, and the two 4x4s are priced from ₹3,999 which is the same as the Creta we will not let you take. If you have been quoted a 2WD hatchback for Spiti by someone else, that is the quote to walk away from.

Because the cars are limited and the season is short, this is the route that sells out furthest ahead. A Jimny for July needs to be booked in weeks, not days. There is no way to produce another one at short notice.

WHICH CAR FOR SPITI VALLEY

Maruti Jimny for self drive to Spiti ValleyRecommended

Maruti Jimny

SUZUKI

₹3,999/day · 300 km included

The right tool. Light, narrow enough for the Kinnaur ledges, genuinely capable in low ratio, and easy on fuel where fuel is scarce. Four seats.

Mahindra Thar for self drive to Spiti ValleyAlso cleared

Mahindra Thar

MAHINDRA

₹4,499/day · 300 km included

More presence and a locking rear differential for the loose stuff. Heavier and wider than the Jimny, which you notice on the narrow sections above Nako.

Toyota Hilux for self drive to Spiti ValleyExpedition

Toyota Hilux

TOYOTA

₹5,999/day · 350 km included

For gear-heavy expeditions and film crews. The cargo bed takes jerry cans and camera boxes, and the 350 km allowance suits the distances involved.

THE KILOMETRE MATHS

Round trip, Chandigarh to Spiti Valley and back

900 km

A Kinnaur out-and-back to Kaza is around 900 km before you have driven anywhere inside the valley, and Spiti is a place where the side trips are the trip. Kibber, Langza, Komic, Pin Valley and Chandratal add several hundred kilometres between them.

On a Jimny at 300 km a day, a seven day hire gives 2,100 km, which is comfortable for the full loop with the side roads included. A nine or ten day hire is what we would actually recommend, and not for the allowance but because rushing this route is how altitude problems and mechanical problems both start. Tell us your itinerary and we will sanity check the kilometres with you before you commit.

Permits and paperwork

The Himachal inter-state permit is included. On top of that, Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the stretch between Jangi and Sumdo near the Tibet border, and for parts of Pin Valley. Those are issued at the SDM offices in Reckong Peo or Kaza and take under an hour with a photo and ID, and we brief you on exactly where to go. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit and cannot travel alone, so a minimum of two people is required.

When to book

The Kinnaur route is generally drivable from late May to October and that is the window we rent for. The Manali side over Kunzum La opens later and closes earlier, roughly late June to early October. Peak demand is July and August, when the 4x4 cars go two to three weeks ahead. We do not hand out cars for Kaza in deep winter, because access depends entirely on the BRO clearing slides.

One way, or drop back in Chandigarh

The best version of this trip is a loop: in through Kinnaur, out over Kunzum La to Manali, so you gain altitude gradually and never repeat a road. We support that and it needs no separate drop charge if you return the car to Chandigarh via Manali. A genuine one way drop in Manali or Kaza carries a retrieval charge, and for Kaza specifically we would rather not, because retrieving a car from 3,800 metres is its own expedition.

FAQ

RENTING FOR SPITI VALLEY

How much does a self drive car rental from Chandigarh to Spiti cost?

The Jimny is ₹3,999 a day and the Thar ₹4,499, both with 300 km included. A seven day Spiti trip in a Jimny is ₹27,993 of rental, covering insurance, the Himachal permit, GPS, 24/7 support and the satellite communicator we lend for this route. Fuel, the Inner Line Permit fees and any overage are separate.

Can I take a 2WD car to Spiti Valley?

Not from us. Past Sumdo the surface is loose shale, there are water crossings that deepen through the day, and the climbs above Kaza go past 4,200 metres. We only release the Jimny, Thar and Hilux for this route. It is a condition of the rental, and it costs the same as the Creta we will not let you take.

Do I need an Inner Line Permit, and do you arrange it?

Indian nationals need one for the Jangi to Sumdo stretch and parts of Pin Valley, but not for Kaza itself. They are issued in an hour at the SDM office in Reckong Peo or Kaza with a photo and ID, and we tell you exactly where to go and what to carry. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit and must travel in a group of at least two.

How many days do I need to rent the car for?

Seven is the honest minimum for the Kinnaur loop. Nine or ten lets you add Chandratal, Pin Valley and a rest day at altitude. Anything under six turns it into a driving marathon and, more importantly, removes the gradual acclimatisation that makes the Kinnaur approach the safer one.

What happens if the car breaks down in Spiti?

You call us and we work the problem with you, which on this route means talking to mechanics in Kaza or Reckong Peo rather than dispatching someone from Chandigarh. Every car goes out with a full service check, the spare and tools verified, and we lend a satellite communicator for the sections with no network. Be realistic though: help in Spiti is measured in hours, not minutes.

When should I book a Jimny for Spiti?

For July or August, two to three weeks ahead at least. We have a small number of 4x4 cars and this is the route that fills them. If your dates are fixed and fall in peak season, book before you book anything else, because accommodation in Kaza is easier to find at short notice than a Jimny is.
