Dharamshala is the most underrated hire we do. It is 240 km on genuinely good road, about five hours, and it lands you somewhere that feels a long way from Chandigarh without any of the difficulty that Manali or Spiti involve.
No part of this route needs a 4x4 or high clearance. The climb into McLeod Ganj is short and paved. What you are actually choosing for is comfort over five hours and enough boot space for however long you intend to stay, because people routinely stay longer here than they planned.
The one genuine constraint is McLeod Ganj parking, which is tight and gets tighter through the day. A smaller car is a real advantage in the upper lanes, which is unusual advice from a rental company but it is what we would tell a friend.
WHICH CAR FOR DHARAMSHALA
Best valueMaruti Swift
SUZUKI₹1,299/day · 300 km included
Cheap, capable and easy to park in McLeod Ganj, which matters more here than horsepower does. The best value on this route by a clear margin.
Easiest driveMaruti Baleno
SUZUKI₹1,999/day · 300 km included
Automatic and quiet, so five hours behind the wheel costs you less. Still compact enough for the narrow stretch above Dharamshala.
For familiesHyundai Creta
HYUNDAI₹3,999/day · 350 km included
For families, or if you are continuing to Bir, Palampur and the Kangra valley and want the extra allowance and comfort.
Seven seatsMahindra Scorpio N
MAHINDRA₹5,499/day · 350 km included
Seven seats for a group. Be honest about McLeod Ganj though, because parking a car this size in the upper town is a genuine chore.
THE KILOMETRE MATHS
Round trip, Chandigarh to Dharamshala and back
480 km
The round trip is about 480 km. On a 300 km car a two day hire gives you 600 km, which covers the drive with 120 km spare, and that is enough for Bhagsu, Naddi and the Dal Lake road but not much more.
Three days at 300 km a day gives you 900 km, and that is the version of this trip worth having. Bir is around 60 km each way, Palampur about 35, and the Kangra Fort and Masroor temple loop adds another 80 or so. All of that fits inside a three day allowance without touching the ₹8 per kilometre overage.

Permits and paperwork
The Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit is included in the rate and the paperwork stays in the car. Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Bir and the whole Kangra valley need nothing further. Bring your driving licence and the ID you booked with, and that is the entire paperwork burden on this route.
When to book
March to June and September to November are the pick. Dharamshala gets serious monsoon in July and August, more than Shimla or Manali, and while the roads stay open the views mostly do not. Winter is clear, cold and quiet, and the Dhauladhar range behind the town is at its best with snow on it. Book a week ahead for long weekends, otherwise a few days is plenty.
One way, or drop back in Chandigarh
A one way drop in Dharamshala is straightforward and we quote it fairly often, usually for people flying out of Gaggal. It carries a retrieval charge for bringing the car back 240 km. If you are staying more than a couple of days, keeping the car is normally the better value, since the Kangra valley is a place where having your own vehicle changes the trip completely.

RENTING FOR DHARAMSHALA
How much is a car rental from Chandigarh to Dharamshala?
A Swift is ₹1,299 a day, a Baleno automatic ₹1,999 and a Creta ₹3,999, each including 300 to 350 km a day, insurance, the Himachal permit, GPS and free Tricity delivery. A three day Dharamshala trip in a Swift is ₹3,897 of rental plus fuel and tolls.
How long is the drive from Chandigarh to Dharamshala?
Around five hours for 240 km, via Anandpur Sahib, Una and Kangra. It is one of the easier long drives out of Chandigarh because the road is in good condition and the climbing is concentrated in the final stretch rather than spread across the whole journey.
Do I need an SUV for Dharamshala?
No. The route is paved throughout and the climb to McLeod Ganj is short. A hatchback is genuinely the better tool here, because parking in the upper town is tight. Choose an SUV for seats and luggage, not for capability.
Can I add Bir Billing to the same rental?
Yes, and most people should. Bir is about 60 km from Dharamshala and fits comfortably inside a three day kilometre allowance. Tell us when you book and we will make sure the allowance suits the full loop rather than just the round trip.
Is there parking in McLeod Ganj?
There is, but it is limited and fills through the morning. Most hotels in the upper town have very little of their own, so confirm parking with yours before you drive up. Parking lower down and walking the last stretch is standard practice here.
What documents do I need?
A driving licence held for at least a year and an Aadhaar card or passport, with a minimum age of 21. Photographs sent on WhatsApp or through the booking form are enough, and weekday approvals usually complete within two hours.
