Dalhousie is the long one that nobody expects to be easy. Most of the 330 km is flat Punjab plain through Ropar, Hoshiarpur and Pathankot, and only the last 80 km from Banikhet climbs. That makes it a long day rather than a hard one, and the fatigue comes from hours in the seat rather than from the road being difficult.
The part people underestimate is the Pathankot stretch. It is single carriageway in places, busy with trucks running to Jammu, and it does not move quickly in the afternoon. If you leave Chandigarh at 6 AM you will be at Banikhet by early afternoon with the climb still in daylight. Leave at 10 AM and you finish the mountain section after dark, which is when the Dalhousie approach stops being pleasant.
Khajjiar sits 24 km past Dalhousie and is the reason most people come. The road there is narrow, single lane in stretches, and shared with grazing animals. It is tarred and any car does it, but it is not a road to hurry on.
WHICH CAR FOR DALHOUSIE
Best valueMaruti Baleno
SUZUKI₹1,999/day · 300 km included
Automatic and frugal, which both matter on a 700 km round trip that is mostly plain highway. The narrow body also helps on the Khajjiar road.
Most bookedHyundai Creta
HYUNDAI₹3,999/day · 350 km included
The sensible pick for four or five people with luggage. The higher seating helps on the Pathankot truck traffic, and 350 km a day suits this distance better.
For sevenMahindra Scorpio N
MAHINDRA₹5,499/day · 350 km included
Only if there are six or seven of you. It is a wide car for the Khajjiar road, so send a smaller second car if the group can split.
THE KILOMETRE MATHS
Round trip, Chandigarh to Dalhousie and back
700 km
Chandigarh to Dalhousie and back, including a Khajjiar day, comes to roughly 720 km. On a three day Creta booking you have 1,050 km of allowance, which is comfortable. On a three day Baleno at 300 km a day you have 900 km, which is still fine but leaves less room for detours.
If you want to add Chamba town, the Bharmour side or a drive out to Sach Pass viewpoint, take four days rather than pushing the distance into overage on three. The extra rental day costs less than the kilometres would.

Permits and paperwork
Dalhousie and Khajjiar are in Himachal Pradesh, so the inter state permit applies. It is already in your rate and travels in the car, so there is nothing to buy on the way. The crossing on this route is at Nangal or Una rather than Parwanoo. Khajjiar sits inside the Kalatop Khajjiar sanctuary, which charges a small entry fee at the gate that you pay directly.
When to book
March to June is the main season and the meadow at Khajjiar is at its best then. July and August bring heavy rain to Chamba district with occasional landslides on the Banikhet climb, so check with us before travelling in monsoon. December to February brings snow, which is beautiful and does close the Khajjiar road for days at a time without notice. October and November are the quietest and clearest months.
One way, or drop back in Chandigarh
A one way to Dalhousie is possible but expensive, because retrieving a car from Chamba district means a driver spending most of two days on it. On a route this long, keeping the car for the return leg is almost always cheaper than the retrieval fee. Ask us for the number before you plan around it.

RENTING FOR DALHOUSIE
How much does a self drive car from Chandigarh to Dalhousie cost?
A Baleno automatic is ₹1,999 a day with 300 km included, and a Creta ₹3,999 with 350 km. A four day Baleno trip is ₹7,996 in rental plus roughly 720 km of fuel. Insurance, the Himachal permit, GPS and Tricity delivery are all inside those rates.
How long does the drive from Chandigarh to Dalhousie actually take?
Eight to nine hours with two stops, and that assumes an early start. The 250 km through Punjab moves well, the Pathankot stretch does not, and the last 80 km from Banikhet is a mountain road. Leaving by 6 AM is the difference between arriving in daylight and arriving in the dark.
Do I need a 4x4 for Dalhousie or Khajjiar?
No. Both are reached on tarred roads and a hatchback does the whole trip. A 4x4 only becomes relevant if there is fresh snow in January or February, and in that case the road is usually shut rather than requiring a better car.
Can I do Dalhousie and Dharamshala in one trip?
Yes, and it is a good combination. Dalhousie to Dharamshala is roughly 120 km via Nurpur and takes about four hours. Give yourself five days for both rather than four, because compressing it means two long driving days back to back.
Is the Khajjiar road difficult?
Not difficult, but narrow. Twenty four kilometres of single lane tarmac through the Kalatop sanctuary, with cattle, sheep and oncoming traffic that will not reverse for you. Drive it slowly, use the horn on blind corners, and do not take the widest car in your group.
What documents do I need?
An original Indian driving licence held for at least a year, plus Aadhaar or a passport. Minimum age is 21. Send them ahead on WhatsApp and most weekday approvals are done inside two hours, which matters on a route where you want to leave at 6 AM.
