The Chandigarh to Dharamshala route goes through the Kangra Valley, which is one of the most underrated drives in Himachal Pradesh. The Dhauladhar range, the lower front range of the Himalayas, runs like a wall to your north the entire way. In March and November, it's snow-capped. The valley below is flat and agricultural.
The road is well-maintained until Una, then good mountain road until Dharamshala. No technical sections. Any vehicle in our fleet is suitable for this route.
McLeod Ganj (the Upper Dharamshala) is where you want to stay. The main Dharamshala town is busy and unremarkable. McLeod Ganj has the temples, the markets, the cafes, and the trailhead for the Triund trek.
What makes a chandigarh to dharamshala self drive genuinely easy is that there is no single tricky stretch to plan around, unlike Shimla's Friday traffic or Manali's Pandoh gorge. The drive is long rather than difficult, so the main decision is really about pacing. Some people do it in one long day, while others break the journey with a night in Una or Kangra to enjoy the Dhauladhar views without rushing. MARCH TO JUNE
The best window and the busiest. The road via Una and Kangra is in good condition throughout, and the Dhauladhar range behind the town is visible most mornings before the haze builds. McLeod Ganj parking is the constraint rather than the drive, and it fills from about ten.
JULY AND AUGUST
Dharamshala takes more monsoon than Shimla or Manali, and it takes it seriously. The road stays open and the Kangra valley turns spectacular, but the Dhauladhar spends most of the time behind cloud and the Triund trail becomes slippery and leech-ridden. If you are coming for the mountain view, come another month.
SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER
Clear, quiet and the best value of the year. Post-monsoon the range is sharp behind the town, the Bir and Palampur roads are freshly patched, and the cafes in McLeod Ganj are pleasant rather than packed. October is our pick for this route.
DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY
Cold, clear and the Dhauladhar carrying snow, which is when it looks best. The drive is unaffected because the route stays low until the final climb. Snow occasionally reaches McLeod Ganj and Dharamkot and clears quickly. The Triund trek in winter is a different undertaking and needs proper gear.

Una at the 100 kilometre mark is the natural fill point and the last easy one before the hills begin. There are pumps at Kangra and lower Dharamshala. McLeod Ganj has none, so fill below before driving up.
Cash and ATMs
Una, Kangra and lower Dharamshala are all well served, and McLeod Ganj has several around the main square. They do run out on busy weekends. Cash matters for parking, the smaller cafes and anything in the Bhagsu direction.
Mobile network
Good the whole way on the highway and good across Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. It drops on the Naddi and Dharamkot side roads and disappears entirely on the Triund trail above Gallu. Download the trail map if you are walking up.
Weather to watch
Heavy monsoon is the defining feature here, and while the road stays open, visibility does not. Occasional landslip near Kangra after sustained rain. In winter, light snow in the upper town that clears within a day and makes the last climb briefly greasy.
How long it really takes
Five hours for 240 kilometres via Anandpur Sahib, Una and Kangra. This is one of the easier long drives out of Chandigarh because the road is in good shape and the climbing is concentrated at the end rather than spread across the journey.
McLeod Ganj is another ten kilometres above lower Dharamshala, and in season those ten kilometres can take thirty minutes. Factor it in, particularly if you are arriving on a Friday evening.
People routinely stay longer here than they planned, which is worth knowing before you fix the return date. If your hire is three days and you are enjoying it, extending is easier than reorganising the drive home.
Where the drive gets hard
The Una to Kangra stretch
Not difficult, but this is where the road narrows and local traffic joins from villages with little warning. Overtaking room is intermittent. The one section where an unhurried approach saves you nothing in time and quite a lot in stress.
The climb to McLeod Ganj
Short, steep and busy, with taxis stopping wherever suits them. In a manual you will be in first gear more than you expect. Nothing technical, just crowded.
McLeod Ganj parking
The genuine problem on this trip. Space is limited, fills through the morning, and most upper town hotels have very little of their own. Confirm parking with your hotel before you drive up, and be willing to park lower and walk the last stretch.
The Naddi and Dharamkot roads
Narrow, steep and single-lane in places, with blind corners and no room to pass. A smaller car is a real advantage here. If you are in a seven seater, park in McLeod Ganj and take a local taxi up.

March to June and September to November are the most comfortable windows, with clear Dhauladhar views. Monsoon (July-August) is green but can bring landslide-related delays near Kangra, and December to February is cold with occasional snow above McLeod Ganj.
