THE ROUTE
WHAT TO EXPECT
ON THIS DRIVE
The Chandigarh-Manali highway (NH3 → NH21 → NH3) is well-maintained by Indian standards, but it is a mountain road, not a motorway. Plan for 7 to 8 hours of actual driving, not including stops.
The most scenic section is the Pandoh Dam to Kullu stretch: the Beas River runs below on your right, sometimes 200 metres below you, with nothing but a crash barrier between the road and the drop. It's spectacular. Drive it in daylight.
Above Kullu, the road flattens and the valley widens into apple orchards. This stretch, Kullu to Manali, is the most relaxing 30 km of the journey.
The Rohtang Pass (if you're going further) opens around May and closes in October. To cross it in a self-drive vehicle, you need a permit from the NGT, which we arrange for Jimny customers. No permit is needed to reach Manali itself.
PRACTICAL TIPS
Leave Chandigarh before 6am, which avoids both city traffic and afternoon mountain fog
Fill up at Kiratpur Sahib, the last reliable petrol before the hills

MARCH TO JUNE
The Kiratpur to Nerchowk four-lane with its tunnels has genuinely changed this drive, and anyone quoting eleven hours is working from pre-2023 memory. April and May are the busiest weeks of the year in Manali and the Solang road backs up from mid-morning. Rohtang opens somewhere in late May depending on clearance.
JULY AND AUGUST
This is the landslide window and the Mandi to Pandoh stretch is where it happens. The road usually reopens within hours rather than days, but build a spare half day into any monsoon plan and do not schedule a flight for the evening you return. The valley is at its greenest and the hotels at their cheapest, which is the trade.
SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER
The best combination of surface, weather and quiet. Post-monsoon repairs are done, the Beas has dropped, and the light in the Kullu valley in October is the reason photographers come. Rohtang closes with the first serious snow, usually in October, while the Atal Tunnel keeps Lahaul open longer.
DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY
NH3 is cleared as a priority so Manali town stays reachable in most years, but the last stretch above Kullu can ice over overnight. Solang and the tunnel approach close on heavy snow days with little warning. This is the season where the honest answer to what the road is like is that it depends on the week.
Fuel, cash and signal
Fuel
Kiratpur Sahib at 65 km is the last dependable pump before the climb and the one to use. After that there are pumps at Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu, all fine. In the valley beyond Manali, fill up in Manali itself before Solang or the tunnel, because Sissu has very little.
Cash and ATMs
Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu and Manali are all well served. Beyond Manali it thins fast, and in Lahaul past the tunnel you should treat cash as the only reliable option. Draw in Manali.
Mobile network
Solid to Mandi, patchy through the Pandoh gorge, and fine again from Kullu. Manali town is good. Solang is workable on Jio and Airtel. Past the Atal Tunnel toward Sissu and Koksar, expect long dead stretches and download your maps offline.
Weather to watch
Two things. Monsoon landslides between Mandi and Pandoh, which are the single most common cause of delay on this route. And winter snow closing Solang and the tunnel approach, sometimes for a day. Both are normal, and both are reasons to tell us if your return slips.
How long it really takes
Seven to eight hours of driving for 310 kilometres, and closer to nine once you count a fuel stop, lunch at Mandi and one slow crawl behind a truck. That is the realistic figure and it is what we would plan a day around.
Leaving Chandigarh at six means arriving in daylight with time to settle in. Leaving at ten means finishing the Pandoh gorge after dark, which is the one thing genuinely worth avoiding on this drive.
In monsoon add a buffer that is not a formality. A single clearing operation on the Mandi to Pandoh stretch can cost two hours, and it happens often enough in July and August that assuming it will not is the wrong bet.
Where the drive gets hard
Mandi to Pandoh
The most landslide-prone section of the route. Narrow, twisting, frequently under repair, and the place where a monsoon delay will find you. Nothing technically difficult in dry conditions, but do not be behind schedule here.
The Pandoh to Kullu gorge
A ledge road above the Beas with the river a couple of hundred metres below. Lane markings fade, oncoming trucks run high beam as standard, and fog gathers after Aut. This is the specific reason to drive this route in daylight.
The Aut tunnel and the Kullu approach
Long, dimly lit and busy. Sunglasses off before you enter, and expect no signal inside. The stretch after it toward Kullu carries a lot of local traffic joining from side roads with limited warning.
Old Manali and Mall Road parking
Paid parking near the Mall fills by mid-morning in season and the surrounding streets are too narrow for comfortable mistakes. Several Old Manali guesthouses have no parking at all, so confirm before you drive up the hill rather than after.
The Solang and Rohtang approach
Where a hatchback stops being enough. Gradients steepen, the surface breaks up in patches, and after any snow this becomes a 4x4 road. The Atal Tunnel is the easier way into Lahaul and needs no permit.

How long does it take to drive from Chandigarh to Manali?
Seven to eight hours of driving for 310 km, and closer to nine once you count a fuel stop, lunch at Mandi and the inevitable slow crawl behind a truck on the Pandoh stretch. Leave Chandigarh by 6am and you reach Manali in daylight with time to settle in. Leave at 10am and you finish the gorge section in the dark, which is the one thing worth avoiding on this route.
Which route is best from Chandigarh to Manali?
Chandigarh, Kiratpur, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu, Manali on NH3 is the standard and the fastest. The Kiratpur to Nerchowk four-lane stretch with its tunnels has cut real time off the drive, so anyone quoting ten or eleven hours is working from older experience. The older Swarghat road still exists and locals sometimes use it when NH3 is blocked, but it is slower and narrower, so treat it as a fallback rather than a plan.
Do I need a 4x4 for a Chandigarh to Manali trip?
No. The road to Manali is tarmac the whole way and a hatchback handles it comfortably. A 4x4 only starts to matter if you continue past Manali, which is where most people actually want to go. Solang, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, Rohtang and anything toward Spiti or Leh is where the Jimny or Thar earns its rate. For Manali town, Old Manali and Naggar, the Creta or even the Baleno is the sensible pick.
Is a permit needed to drive from Chandigarh to Manali?
Nothing beyond the standard Himachal Pradesh inter-state permit, which is already included when you rent from us. Rohtang Pass is the exception: crossing it needs a separate permit capped at a limited number of vehicles a day, applied for online in advance. The Atal Tunnel bypasses Rohtang entirely and needs no permit, which is why most Lahaul trips now go through the tunnel instead.
What is the best time of year to drive to Manali?
March to June and September to November are the sweet spots. April and May bring crowds but also the best weather for Solang and Rohtang. July and August are green and cheap and also the landslide months on the Mandi to Pandoh stretch, so build slack into the plan. October gives you clear air and thin traffic. December to February is snow season, beautiful in town, and the point where you should be asking about tyres and road status rather than assuming.
Can I drive to Manali in winter?
Manali town stays reachable through winter in most years because NH3 is cleared as a priority, but the last stretch above Kullu can turn icy overnight and Solang and the Atal Tunnel approach close on heavy snow days. If you are travelling between December and February, tell us at booking. We will talk through vehicle choice and current road conditions rather than sending you up on a guess.
Where should I break the journey from Chandigarh to Manali?
Mandi at the 200 km mark is the natural halfway halt for a proper meal. Bilaspur is the better photo stop, because Gobind Sagar comes up on your right and looks nothing like a reservoir. Kiratpur Sahib at 65 km is where you fill the tank, since it is the last dependable pump before the climb. If you are travelling with children or elderly passengers, an overnight at Mandi turns a hard day into two easy ones.
Is night driving safe on the Chandigarh to Manali highway?
Not recommended, and specifically not on the Pandoh to Kullu gorge. That section runs on a ledge above the Beas with the river a couple of hundred metres below, the lane markings fade, and oncoming trucks use high beam as standard. Add fog after Aut and the risk stops being theoretical. Plan the drive so that section happens in daylight.
Where do I park in Manali?
The Mall Road area has paid parking that fills by mid-morning in season, and the streets around it are narrow enough that reversing out of a wrong turn takes real patience. Most people do better parking near Old Manali or at their hotel and walking in. If you have booked a hotel in Old Manali, confirm they have parking before you drive up, because several do not.
