THE ROUTE
FLAT ROADS,
BIG DESTINATION
The Chandigarh–Amritsar drive on NH7 is about as straightforward as Indian highways get. Flat terrain all the way, well-marked road, no mountain passes to navigate. You can genuinely do it in 4 hours - 4.5 if you stop for a dhaba meal in Jalandhar.
This is a different trip to Manali or Spiti - it's cultural, not adventurous. The Golden Temple at night, with the marble reflecting in the Sarovar and Gurbani playing across the courtyard, is one of the most profoundly peaceful experiences India offers.
Wagah Border is 30 km from Amritsar and worth the evening ceremony - the Beating Retreat happens at sunset daily and draws several thousand people. Book a seat earlier in the day at the BSF office to get a good spot.
The food in Amritsar is in a different league. Kesar Da Dhaba for dal makhani, Bharawan Da Dhaba for stuffed parathas, Kulcha Land for amritsari kulchas. Plan your eating before you plan your sightseeing.
PRACTICAL TIPS
NH7 is a 4-lane expressway for most of the route - fast and easy driving
Take both Ludhiana and Jalandhar bypasses - the city routes add 45 min each
Amritsar city driving is chaotic - park on the outskirts and use a rickshaw to the Golden Temple
Wagah Border ceremony is at sunset - leave Amritsar by 3pm for the 30km drive
Winter fog (Dec–Jan) can bring visibility to near-zero - check conditions before departure
The Golden Temple complex has dress codes - carry a head covering or buy one at the entrance

Winter Fog Warning
Punjab winters (December–January) bring dense fog that can drop visibility to near zero on NH7. Check weather conditions and leave only when safe. Night driving is especially risky in this period.

STOP BY STOP

km
Chandigarh
Start early - 7am or before - to reach Amritsar by midday. The NH7 is fast and well maintained through Punjab plains.
50
km
Morinda / Ropar
The Sutlej River crossing near Ropar is a quiet moment on an otherwise highway-fast drive. Good fuel stop at Morinda if needed.
120
km
Ludhiana Bypass
Take the bypass - do not enter Ludhiana city. The bypass adds 10 minutes but saves you 40. NH7 signage is good here.
170
km
Jalandhar
Another city to bypass. The Jalandhar bypass is well-marked. Stop here for proper dhaba food if you're hungry - the roadside Punjab food here is excellent.
230
km
Amritsar
Golden Temple is best visited at dawn or late evening when the light on the Sarovar (holy tank) is extraordinary. The midnight langar is a separate experience entirely.
