NH5 TO THE
SUMMER CAPITAL
The Chandigarh-Shimla highway (NH5) is one of the better-maintained mountain roads in Himachal Pradesh. It is scenic without being technical, which makes it good for first time mountain drivers and families with children.
The climb starts at Parwanoo, about 55km from Chandigarh. The next 60 km is continuous mountain road, well paved, with guardrails on most of the exposed sections. Pine forests and terraced apple orchards run alongside the road.
Shimla itself is a parking nightmare. The Mall Road is pedestrianised. Park at the designated car parks (Rivoli or Victory Tunnel), buy a parking ticket, and walk the 15 minutes uphill to the main town. It's worth the walk.
Timing this drive matters more than most people expect. Leave Chandigarh by 8am and you land in Shimla with most of the afternoon still ahead of you, which is enough time for Mall Road, the Ridge and a short walk up to Jakhu Temple before dark. Leave any later on a Friday and you will sit in the queue of Delhi-bound traffic that funnels through Solan every weekend. MARCH TO JUNE
NH5 is in good condition and the four-laning below Solan has taken real time off the drive. This is also peak season, so the last twenty kilometres into Shimla can crawl on a Saturday and the parking at Lakkar Bazaar fills by mid-morning. Reaching Shimla before two in the afternoon is the whole trick in summer.
JULY AND AUGUST
The road stays open and is cleared quickly, but the Solan to Kandaghat section takes small slips in heavy rain and you should expect at least one stop behind a clearing crew. Waterfalls appear on the cut faces above the road, which is lovely and also means loose stone on the tarmac. Drive further from the hillside than feels natural.
SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER
The best value and arguably the best driving of the year. Clear air, thin traffic and a surface that has just been repaired after monsoon. Late November nights get cold enough for ice on the Kufri road, but the Chandigarh to Shimla leg itself is straightforward.
DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY
NH5 is a priority clearance route, so Shimla stays reachable in most years even after heavy snow. What closes, sometimes for a day at a time, is the road above Kufri toward Narkanda and Chail. Chains are rarely needed on the highway itself. Black ice on the shaded stretch above Kandaghat before nine in the morning is the genuine hazard.
Fuel, cash and signal
Fuel
Pumps are plentiful to Solan and thin out after it. Fill at Parwanoo or Solan rather than assuming Shimla will be convenient, because the pumps in town sit at awkward points on one-way stretches and queue in season.
Cash and ATMs
Shimla has no shortage of ATMs on the Mall and in Lower Bazaar. Cash still matters for parking, porters at the car parks and the smaller places in Lower Bazaar, so carry some.
Mobile network
Good on the highway the whole way and good across Shimla town. It patchy in the deeper cuts between Kandaghat and Shoghi and around the Jakhu approach. Do not rely on a live map through the tunnels.
Weather to watch
Winter is the one to plan around. Snow above Kufri closes the Narkanda and Chail roads at short notice while Shimla itself stays open. In monsoon the risk is a slip between Solan and Kandaghat. Check the road status the morning you travel rather than the week before.
How long it really takes
Three hours for 115 kilometres, which sounds slow until you drive it. The first forty minutes to Parwanoo is flat and quick, then the remaining seventy five kilometres is a continuous climb with trucks on it.
Add an hour for a proper stop at Barog or Solan, both of which are worth it. Add another hour if you arrive on a Saturday afternoon in May, because the queue starts well below the Shimla bypass.
The number people get wrong is the return. Downhill is not faster on this road. Shimla to Chandigarh takes the same three hours, and on a Sunday evening it takes four.
Where the drive gets hard
Parwanoo to Solan on NH5
Sixty kilometres of continuous climb mixing slow trucks with impatient cars. In a manual this is where your clutch leg starts complaining. Sit behind a truck rather than taking a blind overtake, because the gaps on this stretch are shorter than they look.
Kandaghat to Shoghi
Tighter bends, deeper cuts and the section most affected by monsoon slips. Loose stone on the road after rain is normal. Keep to the outer half of your lane where the hillside is above you.
Entering Shimla and the Mall
You cannot drive to the Mall. It is pedestrianised. Park at Rivoli, Lakkar Bazaar or Victory Tunnel and walk up ten to fifteen minutes. Attempting to get closer means one-way lanes, hotel touts and a reversing manoeuvre you will remember.
The Kufri road in winter
Fourteen kilometres from Shimla and a different proposition after snow. Ice forms on the shaded sections and the drop-offs are unforgiving. If it has snowed in the last two days, ask locally before driving up rather than following the car in front.

What is the best time of year to drive to Shimla?
March to June is warm and green, October and November are the clearest and quietest months, and December to February can bring snow above Kufri, which is beautiful, but check road conditions before you leave if you are travelling in winter.
Can I combine Shimla with Kufri or Chail in the same trip?
Yes. Kufri is only 14 km further and is a common half-day add-on. Chail is about 45 km from Shimla and works well as an overnight extension if you have an extra day in your rental.
