THE ROUTE
THE GREATEST
INDIAN ROAD TRIP
The Manali–Leh Highway is not a route - it's a commitment. 480km of high-altitude mountain road crossing five passes, the highest of which is Tanglang La at 5,328m. You will drive through terrain with no phone signal, no petrol, and no roadside assistance for 200km stretches.
This is also the most spectacular road on the Indian subcontinent. The Lahaul Valley after Rohtang Pass looks like another planet. The Morey Plains above Leh are flat, high-altitude grassland at 4,200m. And then there's Pangong Lake - a 135km-long saltwater lake on the Indo-China border, a blue so intense it looks artificially coloured.
Plan 10–14 days minimum. Rushing this trip is the only way to ruin it. Budget 2 days for acclimatisation in Manali, 4 days from Manali to Leh, and then 4–5 days exploring Leh and its surroundings.
Altitude, not the road surface, is what actually ends most people's Leh trips early. The climb from Manali to Leh gains close to 3,000 metres in three days, and skipping the acclimatisation day in Manali is the single most common mistake we see. Drink more water than feels necessary, avoid alcohol until you are settled in Leh, and treat headaches above Baralacha La as a signal to slow down, not push through. If a chandigarh to leh self drive is your first genuinely high-altitude trip, this is worth taking seriously well before you leave Chandigarh.

FAQ
LEH TRIP
QUESTIONS
How many days do I need for a Chandigarh to Leh road trip?
Plan on 10-14 days minimum. That covers a rest day in Manali for acclimatisation, three to four days on the Manali-Leh Highway itself, and four to five days exploring Leh, Pangong Tso, and Nubra Valley without rushing.
Why is the Jimny 4x4 mandatory for this route?
The Manali-Leh Highway crosses five passes above 4,000 metres, including sections with loose gravel, water crossings, and long stretches with no fuel or phone signal. Our policy restricts 2WD vehicles from this route for safety, so the Jimny 4x4 is the only vehicle we allow for Leh bookings.
What permits do I need to drive to Leh and Ladakh?
You need an Inner Line Permit for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and other border zones, plus a Rohtang Pass NGT permit if you are driving via Manali. We arrange all of this for you as part of every Leh booking, so there is nothing to sort out on your own before the trip.
When is the best time to drive from Chandigarh to Leh?
The Manali-Leh Highway is open from around June to September. Late June to early July tends to have the best combination of open passes and green Lahaul valleys, while September gives you quieter roads and clearer skies, though nights get noticeably colder.
Is altitude sickness a real concern on this route?
Yes, and it is the single biggest risk on this trip - more than the roads themselves. The mandatory rest day in Manali exists for exactly this reason. Do not skip it, hydrate constantly on the climb, and let us know immediately if anyone in your group shows symptoms above Baralacha La.
Can I do the Chandigarh to Leh trip without previous mountain driving experience?
We would not recommend it as your first mountain drive. This route is genuinely expert-level with multiple high-altitude passes and long stretches without assistance. If you are new to hill driving, routes like Chandigarh to Shimla or Chandigarh to Manali are a better starting point before attempting Leh.
PANGONG OR
KHARDUNG LA?
Leh is the bucket list trip. One Jimny, 10–14 days, all permits arranged. Book early - Jimny availability in June and July fills up fast.
